Magnitude 6.5 quake rattles West Sumatra in Indonesia

A strong earthquake has struck off West Sumatra in Indonesia,but there was no tsunami alert issued or immediate reports ofcasualties or damage.
The epicentre of the 6.5 magnitude quake was 165 km west ofBengkulu at a depth of 22 km, according to the US GeologicalSurvey.
“There is no tsunami warning because it was below 7.0,” a quakeagency spokesman says, adding that the quake had been felt inBengkulu and Padang but not strongly.
Another official at the disaster management agency says therewere no immediate reports of damage.
Indonesia frequently suffers earthquakes and there is a majorfault line running just off the coast of Sumatra.
More than 1,000 people died after a powerful quake hit the cityof Padang last September.
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that struck further north onSumatra island killed 170,000 people in Aceh province alone.
