Twitter blocked a pair of popular third party Twitter clients today: UberTwitter for iPhone and BlackBerry, and Twidroyd for Android. Twitter says that the applications violate its policies, noting that it suspends hundreds of applications daily for similar violations. Twitter did not say what violations the two applications have been suspended for.

Update: According to a statement issued to TechCrunch, the suspensions are due to trademark infringements. Twitter contacted UberMedia, which owns Twidroyd and recently acquired UberTwitter, initially in April of 2010 about the issue. also, a Twidroyd tweet claims that a compliant version of its app will be uploaded to the Android market soon.

The timing, at least as far as Twidroyd goes, seems to suggest that the suspension could have something to do with new features that were recently added to the app. Twidroyd released version 5.0 on Wednesday, February 16 (two days ago). the previous update of Twidroyd had been released on December 11 of last year, which would have given Twitter plenty of time to react to some perceived infraction before now.

UberTwitter’s website is down as I write this, which we assume is a result of heavy traffic due to the Twitter suspension.

You can see the suspension notice that appears when Twidroyd users load that particular client in the photos at the top of this story.
