THE wife of embattled TV star Ernie Dingo has declared she still loves him, despite a sex scandal and a police probe into allegations he hit a child at a school.

Sally Dingo and her husband have broken their silence on his tumultuous year, as police moved this week to investigate claims he slapped an 11-year-old boy at a West Australian school.

The star’s fall from grace started in May when a women’s magazine revealed he had been involved in a lurid photo sex scandal.

While labelling her husband of 20 years a d—head, in a candid interview with the Herald Sun, Sally said she would stand by him and that their marriage was rock-solid.

"Ernie is famous," she said. "Women have been throwing themselves at him for years. Like most famous people, women see the charisma and virtually undress themselves and wait at the door.

"he had an affair, a one-night-stand in fact, but then he sent her texts and she thought they were going to live happily ever after, so then she got upset."

But it was Dingo himself who rubbished claims the couple had an open marriage.

He said his wife’s comments in a women’s magazine responding to allegations of his affair had been taken out of context.

"nowhere was it said by myself or Sally that we have an open marriage," he said. "We never said anything like that. it has been blown out of proportion."

The couple, who live on a rural property in Melbourne’s outer east, said despite the recent "hiccups", they remained happy.

"I still love Ernie, the d—head," Sally said. "I’ve known for years he is a d—head, but he is also very good at what he does. he is very good for the Aboriginal community and he cares deeply."

And the couple flatly denied the latest assault claim.

"I deny it, but until there is an outcome I can’t really talk about it," the actor said.

It is believed the mother of the boy at the centre of the assault claim approached a TV station before reporting it to police. it is also understood the woman could be a distant relative of the star.

"This behaviour that Ernie has been accused of is just not on," Sally said. "I have seen him with kids … this is ridiculous."

Dingo’s TV career has plateaued since the great Outdoors travel show was cancelled by Channel 7.

Despite Dingo’s role in Aussie flick Bran Nue Dae, Sally said he was probably more satisfied serving the Aboriginal community, rather than relaunching a TV career.

"He’s not 27 and doesn’t look good in a wet T-shirt. That’s the reality," she said.
