IN OTHER AREAS

l The Lewisville Historical Society has been awarded the 2009 Stedman Incentive Grant from Preservation North Carolina in recognition of the George Elias Nissen House restoration project in Lewisville.

Initiated in 1975 by the late Marion Stedman Covington of Greensboro, in memory of her father, the $10,000 grant is awarded annually to a non-profit organization in the rescue of an endangered historically and architecturally significant property.

One of Lewisville’s oldest homes built circa 1876, the Nissen House is a significant example of Italianate and Greek Revival architecture in North Carolina.

l Elizabeth Dampier was recently appointed the new executive director of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem. Most recently, she served as executive director of the Gaston County Museum of Art and History in Dallas, N.C. her new responsibilities will include personnel management, overseeing the financial operations of the Museum and the development and growth of the museum.

Dampier holds a B.A. from the UNC Chapel Hill, and an M.A. in public administration from N.C. State University.

IN THE MILITARY

l Army Reserve Sgt. Tonya M. Dale has been mobilized and activated at Fort Dix, N.J., in preparation for deployment to serve in support of either Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom. she is a member of the 678th Adjutant General Company in Charlotte.

Dale, a postal clerk, has served in the military for nine years. she graduated in 1979 from Springfield Gardens High School, N.Y., and received an associate degree in 2005 from Montreat College, N.C.

Dale is the daughter of Barbara A. Evans of Winston Salem.

l Air Force Airman Sarah F. Clark graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. she is a 2004 graduate of West Forsyth High School, and the daughter of Mary Clark, and granddaughter of Frances Cavanaugh, both of Lewisville.

l Navy Seaman Apprentice Christoffer D. Lee was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, great Lakes, Ill. he received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle.

Lee is the son of Lynne C. and Douglas E. Lee of Clemmons.

IN SPORTS

l Drew Taylor Hewitt of Bermuda run was the winner in the Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited show Pleasure Division at The American Royal Horse show in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 20. With that win, she completed the American Saddlebred Horse Association’s version of the Triple Crown. Hewitt, riding WCC Sunken Treature, had earlier wins at the World’s Championship Horse show and the Lexington Junior League Horse show, both in Louisville, Ky.

She is the daughter of Carol and Andy Hewitt, and attends Forsyth Country Day School. she has been riding since she was 4, and currently trains with Evan and Mary Orr at High Caliber Stables in Kernersville.

l Chris Mauck of Lexington won the Junior Broadcaster contest, a partnership between the Carolina Panthers, Southeast Dairy Association and Harris Teeter. he recorded a message about healthy lifestyles that was played on the Panthervision screen at the Dec. 6 game.
