What we've learned, think we've learned, still not sure about during Cowboys …
The next time we see the Cowboys on the field together will come July 24 inside the Alamodome for the start of training camp. we have seen four organized team activity workouts and four mini-camp practices. I can’t count today’s session as a practice, really.
But here are some things we know, things we think and things we’re not sure of:
THINGS WE KNOW
** Tony Romo will be better in 2010 than he was in 2009 … and that’s a pretty difficult thing to do. He had only nine interceptions last season and his decision making was much better. Romo has been pretty sharp the entire off-season.
** There’s no need to worry about Miles Austin being a one-year wonder. He might not have gotten much of a look early in the OTAs but he has been unstoppable as the work went on. You can say the same about Anthony Spencer and Mike Jenkins, too.
** Jason Witten catches more than two touchdown passes this season.
** The defense comes up with more than 11 interceptions on the year.
** Dez Bryant will make some incredibly athletic plays to take away your breath but will also have some brain cramp moments, too.
** DeMarcus Ware is more active. He wants to do more than just get sacks. it bugged him last year that he did not get an interception.
** Mat McBriar will continue to do his job as good as any other player on the roster.
** Wade Phillips is as comfortable as he’s been as the head coach. maybe it was getting the extension from Jerry Jones after last season. It’s the first time that he’s had an owner truly believe in him and it’s added to Phillips’ resolve.
THINGS WE THINK
** The Cowboys will keep six wide receivers on the final 53 man roster.
** Sean Lee will be the nickel linebacker. The rookie has been that impressive early.
** Alan Ball will be fine at safety. so will Doug Free at left tackle.
** Martellus Bennett will produce more in 2010 and not just because 2009 was such an off year for him. He still needs to be prodded to do the right things all of the time but he’s done more of that this off-season.
THINGS WE’RE NOT SURE OF
** Roy Williams’ production. He keeps saying the rapport between him and Romo is much better this year than last. I guess it is but I don’t know if it will mean more production.
** Jason Williams’ role on the team. The third rounder from a year ago is in a weird spot with Lee being the nickel guy. There’s still a lot to learn for him.
**How many offensive linemen do they keep? I can see them keeping nine this year but not 10.
** Jerry Jones has expressed confidence in David Buehler. as has Joe DeCamillis. until he does it in game-like conditions, Buehler will be a question.
