Ocean cable connects Hawaii, Tahiti
The first Polynesian submarine cable linking the United States and Tahiti landed on the Big Island of Hawaii Monday.
The cable between French Polynesia and the Big Island is 3,107 miles with the highest depth at 19,500 feet and will allow economic exchange with high speed Internet connectivity between the countries.
The cable is expected to significantly improve communication services throughout the islands of Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine, Moorea and Tahiti and bring the islands more affordable international broadband Internet services.
The cable on Ohaiula (Spencer Beach) in Kawaihae on the Big Island links French Polynesia with a fiberoptic cable system in the Hawaiian Islands.
“The possibilities for scientific research, distance learning, cultural exchange and telemedicine are among the opportunities for this region as a result of this historic landing,” said Edouard Fritch, vice president of the government of French Polynesia.
About $108.4 million was invested to complete the project, which began five years ago. Cable laying for the domestic link started Nov. 24 on the island of Bora Bora. the international link started on Dec. 19.
